Chapter 25: The Gynecologist
Although the man before her didn’t look like a doctor, there were only the two of them in the car now. Since he claimed he had the ability to cure her, she figured she might as well trust him this once, though there were still some questions she needed answered.
“Mister, how do you plan to treat me?”
In Ye Qiong’s experience, treating such an ailment required at least a bowl of brown sugar water—yet where could one find that in a car?
“With my hands,” he replied.
“What?” Ye Qiong instantly pegged Zhang Shen as a scheming little man, suspecting he was taking advantage of her discomfort.
Zhang Shen saw the look in her eyes and seemed to realize he may have said something wrong.
“It’s like this: I gather true energy in my palms and then massage your abdomen.”
“True energy?”
“Yes!” Zhang Shen nodded hurriedly, signaling he wasn’t lying.
His earnest demeanor, coupled with Ye Qiong’s unbearable pain, left her no choice but to allow him to treat her.
“Alright,” she agreed.
Zhang Shen, seeing her consent, recalled the methods described in the Qibo Pharmacopeia for curing women’s menstrual pain. He sat cross-legged, pressed his palms together, and soon a stream of white vapor appeared around his hands.
Ye Qiong could hardly believe her eyes—he had spoken the truth!
Seeing the moment was right, Zhang Shen placed his palms near Ye Qiong’s abdomen and gently massaged. Soon, a wave of heat flowed through her body, easing much of her pain.
He continued massaging her abdomen for over twenty minutes, and gradually, Ye Qiong’s condition improved; her cheeks began to glow with color.
Just as Ye Qiong was still savoring the warmth, Zhang Shen withdrew his hands.
“It’s done,” he said.
Ye Qiong felt not a trace of pain.
“Are you really a gynecologist?” she asked.
Zhang Shen, still somewhat dazed, nodded.
“Which hospital are you from? Do you know this pain hits like a raging flood every time? Luckily I met you today.”
Seeing Ye Qiong was out of danger, Zhang Shen replied, “It was nothing, no need for thanks.”
He was about to decline further, but his phone rang again.
Zhang Shen glanced at the screen—it was Chen Tingting calling. He quickly motioned for Ye Qiong to keep quiet.
“Hello, Tingting…” Zhang Shen barely finished uttering the word “sister” before Chen Tingting shouted, “Zhang Shen, you’re too slow for words! If you don’t show up for your shift right now, and my date falls through tonight, I’ll tear you to pieces!”
“Tingting, I really was in a car accident on the way here, I swear!”
“Don’t give me useless excuses—when will you arrive?”
“Right away, I’ll be there soon!” Sensing Chen Tingting’s fury, Zhang Shen scrambled out of the car, limping toward the internet café. Ye Qiong, watching his condition from the car, got out and followed him.
She supported Zhang Shen and said, “Where are you going? Let me drive you.”
Zhang Shen protested, but secretly, he was touched by this gesture.
When they arrived at the internet café’s entrance, Ye Qiong was dumbfounded; she had no idea why a gynecologist would come here so late at night.
As soon as Zhang Shen opened the door, Chen Tingting stormed out.
Seeing a beautiful young woman beside Zhang Shen, Chen Tingting assumed he had deliberately delayed her date.
“My great doctor, why are you here for work? Didn’t you claim you were in a car accident? Have you lost your mind?”
“Tingting, I really was in a car accident. If you don’t believe me, ask this young lady.”
Chen Tingting didn’t care if Zhang Shen was telling the truth. She only knew that, because of his delay, her boyfriend had already called several times urging her.
“This gentleman really was in a car accident. We just came from the hospital. However…”
“Hmm? However what?” Chen Tingting was puzzled as to what Ye Qiong meant.
“You just said he works here?”
“Yes, he’s the night shift manager.”
Ye Qiong was astonished. “He’s not a gynecologist? Why is he working as a café manager?”
“Little sister, this must be your first time dealing with him! Our so-called great doctor, relying on his medical skills, doesn’t even bother showing up for shifts anymore.”
Zhang Shen realized Chen Tingting was determined to make trouble for him tonight; if she kept speaking so freely, things would surely spiral out of control.
“Tingting, you still have a date, don’t you? I’m here now, so why aren’t you leaving?”
His words reminded Chen Tingting of her appointment.
“Fine, I’m leaving. I won’t play with you two anymore.”
After Chen Tingting departed, Ye Qiong demanded, “Now, can you explain yourself?”
“Explain what?”
“Aren’t you a gynecologist? Why are you working here?”
“Uh, it’s a side job.”
“Do you take me for a three-year-old? Tell the truth, or you’ll regret it.”
After a whole day’s toil, Zhang Shen only wanted a quiet place to rest. Faced with Ye Qiong’s interrogation, he wished for a swift end.
“I’m the night shift manager here. Saving lives is my duty, but I don’t have a medical license, so I can only practice medicine during the day and work here at night.”
He spoke truthfully, though his weary appearance made him seem almost like a liar.
“By that logic, you’re a selfless do-gooder seeking no reward?”
“Isn’t it obvious?”
Ye Qiong’s doubts about him only deepened; she pulled out her phone and dialed a number.
“Dad, I’m at Shunyi Lane, and someone bullied me.”
She hung up immediately.
“Listen, miss, you can’t wrong a good man! I just saved you!”
“Hmph! You dared to fool me—wait and see what happens next.”
A few minutes later, a black Mercedes sped to the café entrance. A middle-aged man with glasses stepped out. Ye Qiong hurried over.
“Dad! That scoundrel claimed he was a gynecologist and tried to…”
Hearing this, Zhang Shen’s first thought was to throttle the girl. What possessed him to treat her? Truly, misfortune had knocked at his door!
The man in glasses sized Zhang Shen up, knowing well his daughter’s temperament.
“Mister, how did you get those injuries?”
Zhang Shen remained composed. “You’d best ask your daughter.”
