Chapter 140: The Little Glutton Is Hungry Again
This came as a significant blow to Tian Rong, but fortunately, the old man had been admitted to their own hospital.
Upon hearing the news, Tian Rong rushed to the entrance of the operating room, only to be surprised by the presence of Chancellor Chen.
"Chancellor Chen, why are you here?"
"How could I not be, given the situation with my old friend? He ate too much lobster at a barbecue stand and suffered food poisoning. Fortunately, my student was there and provided the initial treatment."
Tian Rong was deeply agitated by any news regarding her husband’s condition. She immediately asked Chen, "Where is this student of yours?"
Chen pointed toward Zhang Shen and replied, "Right here! This is Zhang Shen."
As soon as she saw Zhang Shen, Tian Rong gripped his hand tightly and asked anxiously, "Young man, how is my husband doing?"
Understanding the distress of a family member, Zhang Shen replied, "Please don't worry, ma'am. The Dean is simply suffering from an allergic reaction to the lobster. Director Wang and I have already treated him, and I believe he will be able to get out of bed by tomorrow morning."
Tian Rong felt a massive weight lift off her shoulders upon hearing this. However, she then thought to herself, "Someone who has been on the operating table being able to walk by the next morning after only a night of rest—that seems rather incredible."
Despite her doubts, she kept her composure and decided not to press Zhang Shen further, turning instead to Wang Yingwu nearby.
"Director Wang, how is my husband really doing? You are the authority on the surgical floor here at Ankang Hospital. Give me a straight answer."
If Wang Yingwu could have easily brushed off questions from someone like Jin Yuejin, facing the Dean’s wife was a different matter entirely. Just as he hesitated, unsure whether to answer, Chancellor Chen stepped in.
"Sister-in-law, do you not trust my word?"
In truth, it wasn't that Tian Rong didn't trust Chen—given their many years of friendship—but the prospect of a patient recovering so quickly from surgery was inherently suspicious.
Chen, sensing her hesitation, added, "Zhang Shen is the most brilliant student I have. If my old friend isn't out of bed by tomorrow morning, you can come looking for me."
With Chen having spoken so definitively, Tian Rong had no choice but to yield. "Since you say so, Chancellor, I am willing to believe you."
"It's getting late," Chen said. "We should be heading back."
After exchanging pleasantries with Tian Rong, Jin Yuejin, and Wang Yingwu, Chen left with Zhang Shen, Jiang Muyun, and Mu Qiao.
Once they were outside the hospital, Chen turned to Zhang Shen and asked, "Are you truly certain my old friend will be able to get out of bed tomorrow morning?"
Zhang Shen was taken aback by the sudden shift in Chen’s tone compared to what he had said inside.
"Chancellor, what do you mean?" Zhang Shen asked, feeling perplexed.
"There were so many people questioning you back there; I couldn't very well stab you in the back, could I? Besides, you are my student, and I have to stand by your side regardless."
Only then did Zhang Shen realize that not only were Wang Yingwu and Tian Rong skeptical, but even Chancellor Chen had been doubting him.
As Zhang Shen pondered this, Jiang Muyun poked him in the side and remarked, "Could you please draft a script before you go around bragging? It would save people from being suspicious."
Zhang Shen wasn't bothered by the skepticism toward his medical skills; he was more curious about how this mischievous girl had managed to track down Chancellor Chen. He reached out and ruffled her hair. "Little Yun, how did you think to find the Chancellor?"
Jiang Muyun’s eyes lit up. "Hmph! You finally realized! I saw you get into the ambulance, but I couldn't think of a way to help you, so I had Sister Mu drive to your school. Luckily, we ran into the Chancellor just as he was walking out. He didn't believe me at first, but once I mentioned your name and the hospital, he agreed to come along."
Zhang Shen chuckled, impressed. "I didn't realize you were such a clever little thing."
"Hmph! So how are you going to thank me?" she pouted.
"How about we go back to that barbecue stand? The owner said the meal would be on the house—it would be a waste not to go," Zhang Shen joked.
To his surprise, Jiang Muyun’s face lit up. "Great! It’s a deal!"
She pulled Mu Qiao toward the car, while Zhang Shen turned to Chen. "Chancellor, don't decline. Since you're already here, why not join us for a late-night snack?"
Despite his scholarly appearance, Chen actually enjoyed the company of the younger generation. He gladly accepted.
Mu Qiao’s car soon arrived at the barbecue stand. Because of the emergency that had occurred earlier, the normally bustling street seemed unusually quiet. This did not deter Jiang Muyun in the slightest.
"Hey, Boss!" she called out to the bearded owner.
The owner looked surprised to see her, and even more so when he noticed the two familiar figures behind her, though he didn't recognize Chen. Seeing them return, he assumed the earlier crisis had been resolved.
"What can I get for you all?" the owner asked.
Zhang Shen then said something that left the owner stunned: "Tell me, boss, how are you still brave enough to keep this stand open?"
The owner was baffled. "What do you mean? The health department already checked it out and said everything is fine!"
"That's not what I'm talking about," Zhang Shen replied. "You still owe us something, don't you remember?"
Still shaken from the "major event" earlier, the owner’s mind went blank, and he couldn't fathom what Zhang Shen was referring to.
