Chapter 136: Ankang Hospital, Yuehu City
However, the old man’s expression soon convinced the shop owner that Zhang Shen had been right all along.
Following Zhang Shen’s instructions, after eight or nine consecutive compressions, the owner noticed the old man’s breathing gradually becoming rhythmic. Although he could not yet breathe autonomously like a healthy person, the old man’s physical response drew an exclamation of awe from the owner.
"Holy crap, it actually worked!"
Perhaps the owner was overly excited; an outsider might have thought he had just experienced the greatest highs and lows of life. The old man’s mouth hung open, gasping like a fish out of water, but those faint, rhythmic breaths were the best news possible.
Just as the owner was cheering for his own handiwork, two distinct sounds echoed from outside: the siren of an ambulance and the wail of a police cruiser.
"Please, everyone step back! We are here to save a life!"
As the voices rang out, the crowd outside the barbecue stall quickly cleared a path. Zhang Shen clearly saw several doctors in white coats approaching with a stretcher, followed by police officers in uniform.
Then, a scene unfolded that caught everyone by surprise.
As soon as the lead doctor reached the old man and saw him lying on the ground, he quickly pulled off his mask and shouted, "Director! Are you alright?"
"Director?"
A question mark formed in the minds of Zhang Shen and everyone present. So, this old man was a hospital director? Zhang Shen paused to wonder: if this old man was a director, how could he be so unaware of his own food allergies?
However, Zhang Shen did not have much time to ponder.
After examining the old man’s condition, the doctor turned to Zhang Shen and asked, "Did you save this man?"
Since Zhang Shen had indeed treated the old man’s allergic reaction, he had to admit it. Even if he hadn't wanted to, there was no way around it with so many eyes watching.
"Yes, I did."
The doctor said nothing, but turned to the police officer beside him. "Officer, I need this young man's cooperation. I ask for your assistance."
The policeman looked momentarily confused, thinking, "Aren't you doctors yourselves? Why do you need him?"
"This... it seems..."
"I understand your difficulties, so I hope that after you finish taking the statements, you can bring him to our hospital." The doctor pointed to the red letters on his chest.
"Yuehu City Ankang Hospital."
As a police officer, he was well aware of the hospital's reputation. It was the first private hospital in Yuehu City, and it was rumored that even the mayor had visited it for inspections multiple times.
Seeing the weight of the organization behind the doctor, the officer dared not delay. He quickly said, "Taking statements isn't as important as saving a patient. Let’s question the barbecue stall owner and the witnesses first. As for this young man, he should accompany you to the hospital."
Zhang Shen felt even more puzzled. What was there to be worried about regarding a private hospital? Yet the officer looked as timid as a mouse meeting a cat, which piqued Zhang Shen's curiosity.
"You two young ladies, what did you see just now?"
Zhang Shen turned and saw that the police had begun questioning witnesses separately, including Jiang Muyun and Mu Qiao. Feeling that since they had come with him, he couldn't just leave them behind, he said, "Officer, these two are with me, so..."
Zhang Shen trailed off, not knowing how to continue. His title of "miracle doctor" was just something people had blurted out, and he had no real credentials to back it up. Plus, he was just a student; he didn't have the influence to easily get the police to release people.
However, a dramatic turn of events occurred.
As soon as the officer heard the first half of Zhang Shen’s sentence, he immediately understood what he was expected to do. He stopped questioning Jiang Muyun and Mu Qiao.
Zhang Shen cast a calm glance at the doctor beside him, knowing that only he could have pulled off such a "miraculous" move.
Seeing Jiang Muyun and Mu Qiao walk over, the doctor spoke again. "Can we leave now?"
Zhang Shen nodded. But given the confusing situation, he didn't want Jiang Muyun and Mu Qiao to come along.
He turned to Jiang Muyun and said, "Xiao Yun, it's getting late. You should head back. I'll handle the rest."
Before Jiang Muyun could speak, he turned to Mu Qiao. "Ms. Mu, please take Xiao Yun home. Once I've finished here, I will come find you."
Hearing this, Jiang Muyun suddenly felt as if this were a final farewell, and she burst into tears.
This left Zhang Shen feeling quite flustered.
Mu Qiao quickly helped Jiang Muyun up and said, "Miss, let’s go back for now!"
Seeing time slipping away, the doctor couldn't stand it anymore and said to Zhang Shen, "Why don't you let them come along? Getting you there is my main priority."
Hearing this, Zhang Shen finally understood that the heart of the matter lay with him. Since that was the case, Jiang Muyun and Mu Qiao would be fine.
"Then you two drive yourselves to Ankang Hospital. I’ll take their ambulance!"
With that, Zhang Shen followed the doctor into the vehicle.
Meanwhile, Mu Qiao urged Jiang Muyun, "Miss, let's go quickly! Who knows what might happen if we linger?"
Jiang Muyun was deeply concerned for Zhang Shen, and at Mu Qiao’s words, she quickly collected herself. They headed to their car and drove toward the hospital.
Because it was an emergency vehicle, the ambulance moved through traffic unimpeded. The old man was quickly rushed to the operating room, and the doctor began to converse with Zhang Shen.
"May I ask your name?"
Zhang Shen had not expected such politeness from a doctor at a private hospital.
"My name is Zhang Shen."
"And may I ask where you are currently employed, Mr. Zhang?"
Faced with this question, Zhang Shen felt little interest. He had no prestigious employment; he was, after all, just an ordinary student.
