Volume One: Beihai Qin Yang Chapter 0029: Background
Bang!
The Enchantress slammed the table, her beautiful face flushed with anger. "Feng Bo, the eldest son of Feng Real Estate, transferred ten million to your account last night. Afterwards, he suffered a mental breakdown. Can you honestly say this has nothing to do with you?"
"Heh, beautiful lady, I was wondering what this was all about. So it's that matter? Feng Bo owed me ten million. A lot of people know about this. Just investigate and you'll see," he replied, smiling as he fixed his gaze on the Enchantress.
This woman was strikingly beautiful—her features exquisite, not even a trace of makeup, and if she did put on some, she’d be the kind of beauty who could topple a kingdom. Her expression was a little cold, but her figure was flawless, accentuated perfectly. He silently appraised her as she stood before him.
Noticing his expression, the Enchantress’s face darkened, her eyes turning razor-sharp. Just as she was about to act, a knock sounded at the door.
Tank, visibly impatient, opened the door. Du Chunlai peeked inside, relieved to find Qin Yang unharmed for the moment, and exhaled in relief. "Sir, this Qin Yang—"
Before he could finish, the door slammed shut again. Tank shrugged indifferently. "The interrogation isn’t over. Wait outside," he said coldly.
Suddenly, the screech of brakes pierced the air. Outside, more than a dozen fully-armed special forces soldiers stormed in, AKs at the ready, as if they could wipe out the entire city police headquarters at a single command.
The new recruits, and even the veteran officers, had never seen such a scene; all their legs turned to jelly. What on earth was happening?
A Red Flag car door opened, and out stepped an elderly man in a traditional tunic suit, his face clouded with gloom. If not for Qin Yang, the old illness plaguing him would never have been cured, and besides, he found the young man quite likable. Qin Yang had come to Bincheng at his invitation; he couldn’t let anything happen to the boy on his own turf.
Du Chunlai nearly wet himself at the sight of this big shot. He never imagined Qin Yang would have such formidable backing, enough to bring the commander of the Bincheng Military District to his defense. Sweat poured down his forehead. Earlier that afternoon, Feng Bo’s father had called, asking him to teach Qin Yang a lesson. Luckily, the Enchantress and Tank had intervened, leaving him no chance. If not, he would have backed the wrong horse and been ruined forever.
Knock, knock, knock.
Du Chunlai, forcing his courage, knocked repeatedly. Tank, annoyed by the noise, flung the door open. "Director Du, do you have a death wish? Don’t you know we’re interrogating a high-priority suspect?"
"Suspect?" Old Master Ye’s face darkened further at those words. He snorted coldly. "Since when has Dragon Division become so overbearing?"
Tank frowned at the elderly man, trying to recall who he was. The Enchantress rose to her feet. "Commander Ye, apologies, we’re in the middle of an interrogation. If you have business, perhaps we could discuss it afterwards?"
"And what if I say no?" Old Master Ye retorted. At his words, every member of the security detail raised their weapons ever so slightly, safeties already off.
Du Chunlai’s face changed dramatically. If a shootout broke out, he’d be the first to suffer—after all, this was his jurisdiction. He glanced at Qin Yang in the distance, trying hard to look ingratiating.
"Brother Qin, this is all just a misunderstanding."
Looking outside, Qin Yang was indeed surprised by Old Master Ye’s arrival, but more than that, he was moved. Judging by the conversation, he could piece together some of what was happening. Though shocked, he quickly buried the feeling.
"Old Master Ye, what brings you here?" he asked with a smile.
"Hmph! If not for you, you rascal, my useless sons said a few words and off you went, making it so hard for this old man to find you." Old Master Ye strode forward, taking Qin Yang’s hand. "Come on, let’s go home."
"Commander Ye, you are free to leave, but he cannot," Tank said imposingly, blocking their way.
"Old Master Ye, let it be. I’m just cooperating with the investigation. Why not head home first, and after I’m finished here, I’ll come to see you?" Qin Yang tried to persuade the old man to go back.
Old Master Ye was stubborn as ever. He sat down on a bench and made no move to leave. "Qin Yang, I’ll wait right here. I want to see how long it takes them to release you."
Back in the interrogation room, Tank and the Enchantress regarded Qin Yang with new eyes, especially Tank. "Kid, not bad. You’ve got some nerve, calling in such a big shot to put pressure on us. Don’t you know we have the authority to act first and report later?"
Act first and report later?
"Impressive," Qin Yang replied with a chuckle. "Well, what exactly do you want to ask me? Now’s the time, since I’m a little short on patience. I can’t keep an old man waiting outside for too long."
"Fine. If you say Feng Bo owed you ten million, why did he transfer the money to you only last night? Within an hour after the transfer, when we arrived at the scene, he had already lost his mind. And, I believe I saw you on the road where the incident occurred. How do you explain that?" The Enchantress unleashed a barrage of questions, her gaze sharp as she interrogated him.
He put on an innocent face. "Beautiful lady, I was drinking all night yesterday, don’t go making things up. You can still smell the alcohol on me. And how should I know why he paid me yesterday? Maybe his conscience was bothering him. I didn’t even leave home last night, so please, don’t accuse me without evidence."
"Everything should be based on evidence. If you find any, you’re welcome to arrest me anytime."
The Enchantress and Tank both looked displeased. While they had special privileges, those privileges couldn’t be used recklessly—especially not against someone who could summon Old Master Ye. He was obviously no ordinary man.
"Kid, don’t get too cocky. We’re letting you off today for Commander Ye’s sake. Next time, you won’t be so lucky."
He glanced at Tank meaningfully and patted him on the shoulder. "You’re still a bit green."
With that, he walked out without a backward glance, leaving Tank staring in astonishment, completely baffled by his words.
"Enchantress, what did he mean by that?"
"You’re asking me? Who should I ask then?" she snorted coldly and strode out.
The Scorpion case had just come to light, only for the trail to go cold with Feng Bo. Now, with Qin Yang drawn in, she still couldn’t discern his background—he seemed like an ordinary man in every respect. But her instincts told her things were far from simple.
"Dig up everything you can on Qin Yang. I want a full report."
News soon reached Feng Bo’s father, Feng Feng. He could hardly believe even the police couldn’t touch Qin Yang, gnashing his teeth in frustration as he looked at his catatonic son. "Son, whether or not this has anything to do with Qin Yang, I won’t let him off so easily."
Once outside the station, Qin Yang got into the car with Old Master Ye. He sent a text to Wu Yaoyao and Su Ying, only for Su Ying to call him immediately.
Under Old Master Ye’s knowing gaze, he answered the phone.
