Wang Xiaoyun stretched lazily, showing off her graceful and alluring figure. Zhao Feng could only keep his eyes down, focusing on his nose, trying his best not to look. Wang Xiaoyun flopped down on the grass, hands cradling the back of her head, gazing up at the sun with narrowed eyes. Before long, the sound of her gentle snoring filled the air.

Zhao Feng rolled his eyes and shook his head. Glancing up at the sun, he decided to lie down as well, closing his eyes. In no time, he too drifted into a deep sleep. There seemed to be a special magic about Wang Xiaoyun that made people feel at ease.

Night fell. The new moon rose, casting its faint light.

A wolf’s howl suddenly pierced the silence, startling Zhao Feng awake. He opened his eyes and, seeing how late it was, was even more shocked. “I actually slept for so long?”

He looked around, but Wang Xiaoyun was nowhere to be seen. Anxious, he called out, “Xiaoyun? Where are you?”

No reply came. Zhao Feng frowned, shaking his head. “Maybe she already went down the mountain.” He started down himself, but as he walked, a thick fog began to gather around him.

Zhao Feng’s frown deepened. “What’s going on? The back mountain isn’t high, why is there suddenly mountain mist?”

Irritated, he chose a direction and started onward. Suddenly, a cold hand gripped his own. Zhao Feng jumped in fright. Turning, he saw that it was Wang Xiaoyun.

He blinked. “Xiaoyun, where did you go just now?”

A blush spread instantly across her cheeks. “I had to relieve myself.”

Zhao Feng rolled his eyes, but didn’t think much of it. He took her delicate, soft hand. “Come on, let’s head back to the village.”

Wang Xiaoyun nodded shyly. Hand in hand, the two walked down the mountain. Zhao Feng’s house was right beside the mountain path, with Wang Xiaoyun’s home next door. So when they reached the foot of the mountain, Zhao Feng immediately spotted the black Audi parked there.

“Uh-oh! My mother’s back!” Zhao Feng felt a surge of anxiety—his house was still sealed off, and armed guards from the Red Agency were stationed there.

He hurried over to the Audi. As he arrived, Chen Lan was sitting on the ground, comforted by Chen Ying at her side, while Li Ping idly played on his phone.

Seeing someone approach, Chen Lan looked up. “Xiaofeng?”

“It’s me, Mom,” Zhao Feng replied gently.

Tears immediately poured down Chen Lan’s face. “Xiaofeng, tell me—what’s going on?”

Zhao Feng sighed and explained the whole story as best as he could, patting his mother’s shoulder in consolation. “Don’t worry, Mom. Dad will be fine. When the official from the bureau left, he told me this matter isn’t too complicated.”

Chen Lan blinked. “What does that mean?”

Zhao Feng shook his head. “I’m not sure either, but trust me—Dad will be all right.”

Chen Lan nodded. “All right, then.”

Zhao Feng offered a comforting smile. “So where will we stay tonight?” Chen Ying asked.

Zhao Feng opened his mouth, but had no good solution. Suddenly, Wang Xiaoyun spoke up. “Why don’t you all stay at my house?”

“No!” Chen Ying and Chen Lan replied in unison.

Chen Lan objected because Wang Xiaoyun was a widow—villagers all said she was cursed to bring misfortune to her husbands. She certainly didn’t want her son spending time with such a woman. As for Chen Ying’s reasons, no one knew.

Li Ping, who had been glued to his phone, glanced at Wang Xiaoyun, and his eyes immediately sparkled. “Why not stay at this big sister’s house?”

Wang Xiaoyun giggled, covering her mouth. “Little brother, you’re sweet to call me ‘sister!’”

Li Ping scratched his head bashfully. Zhao Feng thought for a moment and said, “Mom, let’s just stay at Xiaoyun’s place for now. This won’t be resolved in a day or two—we can’t go to a hotel every night.”

“Yes, exactly!” Li Ping quickly agreed. For once, he found Zhao Feng’s suggestion perfectly agreeable.

Chen Lan and Chen Ying wanted to object, but Zhao Feng made the final decision. So, everyone moved into Wang Xiaoyun’s house. Chen Lan shot her a look full of resentment, as if Wang Xiaoyun had killed her son.

That night, Zhao Feng slept alone in one room, hands behind his head, staring at the dark ceiling.

Knock, knock, knock.

“Who is it?”

No answer—just persistent knocking.

Zhao Feng frowned, got up, and opened the door. He was surprised to see Chen Ying standing outside.

He blinked. “What is it?”

“Look.” Chen Ying held up her arm for Zhao Feng to see.

He frowned. “What about it?”

She rolled her eyes. “I wanted you to look at my arm—there’s not even a scar left!”

“Of course!” Zhao Feng said with pride. “Who do you think made that medicine?”

“Oh, listen to you brag.”

Zhao Feng pretended to be upset. “If you think I’m bragging, then you can leave.”

Chen Ying quickly laughed. “I was just joking! Don’t be mad.”

“Hmph. Out with it. If you have something to say, say it.”

She pouted. “How can you be so crude?”

“Fine, fine.” Seeing Zhao Feng was about to get annoyed again, Chen Ying hurried to explain. “I came to thank you.”

“How?”

“Look!” She handed him a card. “Here—your new SIM card is ready.”

Zhao Feng was taken aback. “I can’t believe you remembered!”

She rolled her eyes again. “Don’t you realize that was the whole point of our trip today?”

Zhao Feng laughed happily. “Teach me how to use it, quick!”

“All right!”

The two went back into the room, and it wasn’t until late at night that Chen Ying left. Nothing happened between them.

The next morning, Zhao Feng and the others got up early. Without even eating breakfast, they had Li Ping drive them into the city. Today, they were going to visit Zhao Jun. It’s worth mentioning that Wang Xiaoyun came along as well, claiming she was worried.

The five of them arrived in the city and headed toward the Red Agency. Li Ping drove to the city center and parked by the roadside. Zhao Feng held his mother’s hand. “Mom, let’s get out.”

Chen Lan nodded. Zhao Feng led her toward the main gate of the Fifth Prison. As soon as they approached, a police officer blocked their path.

“What do you want?”
