Chapter 43: President Shen’s Little Shadow
“Are you leaving too, you rascal?” Lin Nanxun approached him, her voice tinged with disappointment.
Seeing the crestfallen look on her face, Shen Hanzhi paused for a moment.
“Miss Lin, sir still has work to do, of course he has to go out,” Zhou Bei, who was standing nearby, stepped over and explained to Lin Nanxun politely.
Lin Nanxun was momentarily stunned, then spoke again in a soft, subdued voice.
“I’m the only one left at home now.”
Aunt Xu was gone too, leaving her alone in the house.
Hearing this, Shen Hanzhi frowned and couldn’t help but say,
“Aren’t there still servants?”
Lin Nanxun suddenly lowered her head in silence. Except for Aunt Lin, she wasn’t familiar with the other servants at home and always felt uneasy around them.
Seeing her fall silent, Shen Hanzhi also grew quiet, his gaze lowered as he watched her for a long time.
It was only after a long while that he seemed to concede, letting out a gentle sigh before asking her,
“Would you like to come along?”
He remembered Lu Yuanchong had once said that it would be good for her to meet more people; perhaps it might help her return to normal.
No sooner had Shen Hanzhi finished speaking than Lin Nanxun’s eyes lit up, her face breaking into a delighted smile as she eagerly nodded.
“I'd like to go…”
Overhearing their conversation, Zhou Bei was visibly startled. Remembering that the boss would be inspecting the group’s jewelry company today, he drew in a sharp breath.
The jewelry business hadn’t been doing well lately…
He pictured the boss flying into a rage over the poor performance and couldn’t help but feel anxious for Miss Lin.
When the boss lost his temper, no one was spared—not even Zhou Bei himself, despite always being close by.
And if sweet, obedient Miss Lin were to be scolded harshly, or accidentally hurt when something was smashed, she would probably cry for a long time…
Just imagining Lin Nanxun’s tearful, heartbroken face, Zhou Bei couldn’t stop himself from making a serious suggestion.
“Miss Lin, the weather’s cold today, perhaps you’d be more comfortable staying at home.”
Given the circumstances, it would be safer for her not to come along and risk getting caught up in the fallout.
But Lin Nanxun didn’t understand his concern.
“But I really want to go with you…” she said, blinking earnestly, her voice sincere.
Shen Hanzhi paid no heed to Zhou Bei’s worries and spoke with an air of finality.
“It’s settled.”
With that, he turned and walked out the door.
“Get in the car.”
Lin Nanxun followed after him happily.
Zhou Bei could only shake his head helplessly before hurrying after them.
…
Nearly an hour and a half later, Zhou Bei pulled up in front of the jewelry company, a subsidiary of the XR Group, parking the car before a building with a striking artistic flair.
Shen Hanzhi pushed open the door and stepped out, with Lin Nanxun quickly trailing after, sticking close behind him.
At the entrance, several men and women dressed in crisp black-and-white business suits stood rigidly in a line, their faces tense with anxiety as Shen Hanzhi emerged from the car.
“President Shen…”
Everyone was so on edge about their fate that no one noticed the small “shadow” following close behind Shen Hanzhi.
That little shadow, for her part, was perfectly well-behaved, quietly tagging along and doing her utmost to remain invisible.
The group trailed nervously after Shen Hanzhi, who frowned slightly and glanced over them.
