“Then stay cold,” Shen Hanzhi released her hand, his voice icy.

Lin Nanxun stood there, stunned, watching him close his eyes and drift off to sleep. She sniffed, feeling aggrieved, but not resentful. Quietly, she pressed herself against him through the blanket, nestled onto her small pillow, and comforted herself in a whisper.

“I’m not cold. Not at all.”

With that, she finally closed her eyes, content.

Shen Hanzhi lay quietly, a woman beside him—a presence he was unaccustomed to. He anticipated irritation and restlessness, but as she settled in, the faint fragrance of her hair drifted to him. Unlike the harsh scent of perfume on other women, hers was subtle, pleasant.

As her soft murmurs reached his ears, the agitation in his heart inexplicably ebbed away. Even the dull ache in his head, the fatigue that so often disturbed his sleep at night, seemed to ease.

He turned his gaze, seeing the girl beside him curled tightly into herself as she slept.

One hand rested over her chest, the other clutching the corner of his blanket—a gesture akin to seeking safety. His eyes lingered for a moment, shifting from her clean face to the red birthmark on the back of her hand, pausing for several seconds.

After a while, he sighed silently and lifted the corner of the blanket.

“Come in.”

Lin Nanxun, curled up in sleep, was startled by his words. She froze for a few seconds, then quickly burrowed toward him. The warm blanket enveloped her, the bed filled with comforting warmth. Her hands and feet, chilled from the cold, grew warm in an instant.

Warmer and more comfortable than any she’d slept in her whole life.

It felt as though, beyond the warmth, there was something else—something that made her feel safe and at ease. She couldn’t name it, but she couldn’t help leaning closer to his warmth, until her body touched his. Only then did she finally close her eyes, satisfied.

The fear and anxiety that had haunted her for so long vanished, suddenly and completely...

Just then, the man’s warning voice sounded, tinged with annoyance.

“Move again and I’ll throw you out!” He hated being touched.

Hearing his threat, Lin Nanxun was startled, immediately keeping perfectly still.

“I won’t move. I’ll behave, I promise.” She earnestly assured him, closing her eyes and not daring to shift again.

Yet in her heart, she couldn’t help but silently grumble.

This bad guy is so fierce, fiercer than Auntie—but not nearly as frightening. Because his bed was so comfortable, she felt safe, like being with her grandparents, maybe even safer and more settled.

So settled that she didn’t want to leave, wanting only to stay close to him.

After a long while, the sound of the girl’s even breathing finally reached Shen Hanzhi. He exhaled quietly, resigned to spending a sleepless night.

Strangely, though, as he listened to her gentle breaths, drowsiness crept over him. He turned off the light, closed his eyes, and, just like that, fell asleep...
