On this side, Scholar Shen was still fumbling with the purchased key, trying to unlock the door, but it swung open from the inside. Lu Beiqin stood before them, his face impassive, voice cold and clear. “What are you doing?”

Scholar Shen met those sharp, intimidating eyes and instinctively stepped back two paces. How could this man’s gaze be so frightening?

Deng Meiru fanned herself, impatience in her tone. “You must be Shen Chutang’s husband. Hurry up and move our things inside. These clothes are made of fine silk; leaving them in such harsh sunlight won’t do.”

Lu Beiqin glanced at the mountain of luggage behind them. So, they were here to move in.

Liu Shuhua had come along, standing off to the side beneath her small parasol. “Why are you just standing there? Move everything inside. From today, Shen Chutang will stay at her parents’ home. You’ll need to find somewhere else to live for now. We have a daughter at home, and it’s not convenient for a grown man to stay here.”

Lu Beiqin didn’t budge.

He recalled what Shen Chutang had told him: her family had pressured her to give this house to her uncle, making her move back to the family’s storeroom. She refused, and now these people had simply brought their belongings and forced the issue. If he hadn’t been home today, they would surely have broken in and seized the place for themselves!

Lu Beiqin’s expression grew colder. “She said, absolutely not.”

Liu Shuhua’s brows knitted, her eyes flashing with anger. To her, Lu Beiqin was only a taxi driver—not worth any respect.

“I’m her mother. When did she get to contradict me? And you, I’m your mother-in-law. Is this how you speak to me? No wonder you’re stuck driving taxis, doomed to a future without prospects!

Let me tell you, move these things in at once! This fine house is yours only because of the Shen family’s generosity. Letting you live here is a kindness; not letting you live here is our right. Who are you to object?”

Scholar Shen, wanting to regain his dignity, chimed in immediately, “Exactly! Open the door at once!”

Lu Beiqin swept his gaze over the group. Not far away stood a tall and a short figure—likely Scholar Shen’s children.

It was sweltering at noon. Shen Duoduo hadn’t wanted to come out at first, but for the chance to show off her room in the West Hill villa to her classmates, she had come anyway. She’d heard that Shen Chutang’s husband was a taxi driver and felt utter disdain. She’d certainly look for a tall, rich, and handsome boyfriend in the future—she’d never settle for someone so weak.

But she hadn’t expected Shen Chutang’s husband to be so attractive; her heart skipped a beat! Shen Duoduo secretly snapped a photo, capturing the villa’s grand entrance and the man’s tall, elegant figure—a perfect match!

His job might be unimpressive, but his looks would surely make her the envy of her circle. Shen Duoduo quickly hatched a plan.

“You must be my brother-in-law, right? Good brother-in-law, this is my luggage. Could you move my things in first?”

Lu Beiqin smiled coldly. “No problem.”

Of course, she was younger and prettier than Shen Chutang—no man could resist her! Besides, dating a handsome man wouldn’t hurt her, and she wasn’t asking him to divorce Shen Chutang. He’d lose nothing.

Seeing Lu Beiqin give in, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. It was unbearably hot, and the thought of cooling off inside made them willing to endure for now.

Lu Beiqin took out his phone and made a call. “Come over.”

Scholar Shen nodded approvingly. “Good thinking, calling someone to help move. Shows you know your place!”

Deng Meiru scoffed, “A guy who drives a beat-up car ought to curry favor with us. Without our kindness, how would he earn a living?”

Li Shuhua, standing in the shade, complained, “Honestly, you should have paid the moving company extra to help us. With so much stuff, we’ll have to spend ages sorting it out.”

Deng Meiru quickly smiled ingratiatingly, “Don’t worry, sister-in-law. Didn’t someone here already call movers?”

A few minutes later, a black stretch sedan pulled up. Out stepped a group of men in black suits, each robust and imposing. Two of them held leashes, each attached to a fierce-looking wolfdog.

Deng Meiru couldn’t help but remark, “Do moving companies dress so formally these days?”

Lu Beiqin’s voice rang out coldly, “Throw all these things out.”

“Yes, sir!” they replied in unison, their presence overwhelming.
