Chapter 41: She Was Nothing Short of a Demon
Shen Chutang took the box and opened it.
“Croak!”
Inside was an ugly toad. As soon as she lifted the lid, the entire room erupted in laughter.
Luo Shencheng gazed at the stage, smiling. “Teacher, did that scare you silly?”
The next moment, Shen Chutang calmly pulled a pair of medical gloves from her pocket, put them on, and, without a hint of hesitation, picked up the toad. Using a cotton swab, she scraped some of the liquid from the creature’s back.
“Although this isn’t biology class, since you’ve gifted me such an interesting specimen, I’ll give you a free lesson. The venom from this type of toad can be used in medicine.”
A flash of silver—her scalpel glinted. The toad went limp in an instant.
Several girls sitting close by turned pale with fright. Was this woman insane, to dissect a toad on the spot like that?
“Furthermore, the head, tongue, liver, gallbladder, and skin of the toad all have medicinal uses,” Shen Chutang continued. In the blink of an eye, she had expertly dissected the creature and placed its parts in a box she’d prepared herself. “By the way, toad meat has a nice texture. Anyone want it? I’ll give it to you as a present.”
For a moment, everyone was stunned by her swift and practiced handling—no one dared utter a word.
“I’ve accepted your gift,” Shen Chutang announced, “now let me lay out my rules.”
Luo Shencheng, the notorious school bully, was not about to submit so easily. He raised his voice. “You think you can control us? Do you even know who I am?”
“I don’t need to know who you are. If you want to break the rules in my class, it’s very simple: if you can beat me, you can walk out of this classroom and skip my lessons.”
Shen Chutang looked not much older than her students, slender and delicate as if a gust of wind could blow her over. Luo Shencheng, standing up, was half a head taller than her.
Hearing her challenge, Luo Shencheng was eager to try. “Don’t say I’m bullying a woman—I’ll let you use one hand!”
With that, Luo Shencheng swung his arm at her.
Shen Chutang sidestepped, intertwined her fore and middle fingers, and tapped his arm. The next instant, Luo Shencheng felt his entire body go numb and collapsed weakly to his knees before her.
Everyone was stunned; some hadn’t even seen what had happened.
Panic flickered in Luo Shencheng’s heart, but his face was full of anger. He roared, “What did you do to me? Lü Wendong, Xu Gaoyuan, what are you just standing there for? Get her!”
Xu Gaoyuan, who had been standing nearby, immediately grabbed a chair leg and swung it at Shen Chutang.
Before anyone could react, Xu Gaoyuan froze on the spot, motionless. A silver needle was embedded in his shoulder—no one had seen when it had been thrown!
Lü Wendong, still embarrassed from having water dumped on him earlier, saw his two friends subdued and pulled a fruit knife from his pocket, lunging straight at Shen Chutang.
He had no intention of actually hurting anyone—just wanted to scare her a bit.
Yet, the knife he gripped tightly was suddenly in Shen Chutang’s hand.
She seized Lü Wendong’s wrist and slammed it down on the desk. In one fluid motion, the knife flashed.
“Ah!!”
Luo Shencheng shouted in alarm, “Lü Wendong!”
Shen Chutang smiled coolly. “Good students shouldn’t bring such dangerous things to school.”
Lü Wendong stared at his own hand in a daze. All his fingers were still intact.
Moments before, the blade had slid so close to the back of his hand, it felt as though she might have severed it right then and there.
Sweat poured down his back. His legs gave way and he collapsed to the floor.
Was this really a teacher? She was a demon!
Luo Shencheng caught a whiff of a pleasant fragrance at the tip of his nose, and suddenly regained feeling in his body. He sprang to his feet.
Xu Gaoyuan was able to move again at last. The three of them glared warily at Shen Chutang.
They were the most notorious bullies in the school—yet they had been put in their place by a woman!
Luo Shencheng glared at her fiercely. “You’re finished! I won’t let you stay here!”
He whipped out his phone and dialed his father. “Dad, there’s a new teacher in our class who doesn’t know her place. Her name’s Shen Chutang—tell the principal to fire her immediately!”
The Luo family had only one heir per generation, and Luo Jiantao doted on Luo Shencheng as if he were made of glass. Whatever his son said was law.
But today, Luo Jiantao’s reaction was uncharacteristically different. “Who did you say?”
Luo Shencheng glanced at the name on the blackboard and gritted out, “Shen Chutang!”
“Put her on the phone!”
He was puzzled why his father wanted to talk to her, but handed the phone over nonetheless.
“Mr. Luo, it’s been a long time.”
The instant he heard her voice, Luo Jiantao became excited. “Miss Shen, is it really you? How is Master Yin these days?”
