Chapter 28: A Display of Affection
The next day, Shen Chutang emerged yawning, only to see Lu Beiqin once again returning from outside in his athletic wear. He must have been out for his morning exercise again. She hadn’t expected ride-hailing drivers these days to hold themselves to such high standards, needing daily workouts.
Lu Beiqin glanced at her sleepy face. “Breakfast is in the kitchen.” With that, he headed for the bathroom, and when he came out, he was already dressed in a full suit.
Shen Chutang couldn’t help but steal a few more glances at him, thinking she had truly made the right choice when she found him. Where else could you find someone who was both presentable in public and handy in the kitchen, who handed over his salary on his own accord, and had such good looks?
After breakfast, Lu Beiqin left for work. He drove around a street corner, where a luxury sedan was waiting. Zhang Chuan stood respectfully to one side, opening the car door for him. “Mr. Lu, there’s an overseas meeting this morning. The documents have been sent to your email.”
Lu Beiqin opened the laptop beside him and skimmed through the files rapidly.
Zhang Chuan knew Lu Beiqin had recently gotten married, but seeing that shabby taxi just now left him a bit surprised. Was their boss really playing the Cinderella game?
“Keep your eyes on the road. Why are you looking at me?” Lu Beiqin didn’t even lift his head, but he clearly sensed Zhang Chuan’s gaze, making Zhang Chuan quickly turn his attention back to driving. “Yes, Mr. Lu.”
Lu Beiqin soon finished reading the documents. As he reached for his phone, he touched his wallet instead. Opening it, he found no cards inside, just a stack of cash. The bright red notes were impossible for Zhang Chuan to miss.
“Mr. Lu, do you need the company’s finance department to prepare cash for you?” After all, Lu Beiqin usually paid by card, with no limits. For him to suddenly start using cash—was there some mysterious project now requiring cash? If so, finance would need to make preparations.
Lu Beiqin was unconcerned. “Zhang Chuan, do you have a partner?”
The topic shifted so quickly that Zhang Chuan didn’t react right away. “Ah, yes, I do.”
Lu Beiqin continued, “Does your partner give you spending money?”
“No, I even have to spend money on them every month.”
Lu Beiqin’s tone remained calm. “This is her allowance for me—not much, just two thousand.”
Zhang Chuan was speechless. He really shouldn’t have asked! It felt like the boss was showing off his romance.
…
“Miss, the herbs you mentioned are all too rare. We don’t carry them here.”
Shen Chutang had visited every herbal medicine shop in the area, but none had the Chinese herbs she was looking for. She sighed—did she really have to contact her uncle?
She hoped Uncle Yin Yunfeng would show some mercy for the sake of their many years as uncle and niece, and spare her a little of his precious herbs.
She took out her phone and dialed Yin Yunfeng. Fortunately, her number had been removed from his blacklist.
Soon, the call connected.
Shen Chutang immediately called out in a soft, sweet voice, “Uncle~”
“Stop right there! Whenever you call me like that, you’re up to no good. Go on, are you in trouble or do you just want to raid my medicinal stash?”
She chuckled, “Uncle, you truly are a genius. I do want to ask you for a bit of herbs, just a little. I can pay for them, really!”
Yin Yunfeng replied, “Tell me what you need.”
Shen Chutang said at once, “Glacier Snow Lotus.”
Yin Yunfeng breathed a sigh of relief. “Send me your address.”
“Thank you, Uncle! Also, Blood Sky Vine, Thousand-Year Snow Blossom, Snow Fox Nether Armor, Hibiscus Secret Fruit, and Blood Dragon Jade!”
Yin Yunfeng gritted his teeth. “You really do want a bit of everything!”
Each of these items was priceless and almost impossible to find. Did this troublesome girl think his place was a department store?
“Uncle~”
“Don’t act cute. Are you planning to make a Bone-Cleansing Pill?”
When Yin Yunfeng said this, Shen Chutang admitted, “Yes, Uncle. I’ve met someone who’s been poisoned by an extremely fierce toxin—it’s Demon Mist. Those afflicted by it, regardless of gender, become increasingly alluring in appearance, but their life fades away like the evening glow. This poison can only be cleansed with the Bone-Cleansing Pill, which purges the poison from bones and blood—only then is there a chance of survival.”
Yin Yunfeng sighed deeply. “Even if you manage to refine the pill, how many could endure the agony of bone cleansing—a pain worse than death?”
“Uncle, I want to try.”
With a beep, Yin Yunfeng hung up.
When she called again, he immediately blocked her number once more.
So frustrating!
Shen Chutang immediately called her master to complain. “Master, Uncle blocked my number again! Next time he comes back, don’t let him have any of the wine I brewed!”
Her master laughed cheerfully. “Oh dear, your uncle is really something—he’s made our Tangtang’s face turn red with anger.”
Shen Chutang complained, telling her master everything that had happened. “If he doesn’t have the herbs, then he just doesn’t—so stingy!”
Her master’s laughter faded. “Do you know why your uncle left the mountain all those years ago?”
