An Eye for an Eye: Making the Enemy Pay the Price
The armored vehicle sped through the night, blending seamlessly into the darkness. Xue Feng sat behind the wheel, his gaze cold and indifferent.
He hadn't expected the enemy to arrive so quickly. If it hadn't been for the timely upgrade of his shelter, facing an armed expedition team would have been a bitter struggle.
"I haven't even made a move against you, and you've already set your sights on me," Xue Feng sneered, a sharp glint flashing in his obsidian eyes. "Since that's the case, don't blame me for showing no mercy!"
Sensing the chill emanating from Xue Feng, the black panther in the back seat tensed, its taut muscles rippling with concealed, surging power.
Judging from the recent battle, though the panther had taken advantage of the confined space, it was clear that its strength far surpassed that of ordinary humans.
"I wonder what would happen if we faced a mutant," Xue Feng mused to himself. That was his greatest concern. According to the intelligence, the shelter he intended to attack housed an esper.
This was Xue Feng’s first time confronting an esper. Even if the enemy’s abilities were mainly supportive, he remained on high alert.
"Let’s see whose abilities are stronger," he thought, a confident smile appearing on his lips.
Soon, the armored vehicle arrived near the police station. Xue Feng didn't drive straight in, instead parking at a distance. He led the black panther on foot, advancing cautiously.
It didn’t take long for him to take in the entire situation of the shelter. The location was remote, with few inhabitants, so logically, the danger should be minimal. Yet, despite this, the survivors had fortified their defenses to the maximum. Steel plates reinforced the walls, sharp wire crowned the perimeter, just like Xue Feng’s own villa.
He also saw patrols: each member carried a Type 95 rifle and moved with trained discipline. Watchtowers had been erected, two guards at each, rotating shifts. Their discipline resembled that of a regular army.
…
"What? They've lost contact?"
Meanwhile, inside the police station, a mature woman sat in the seat of highest authority. She wore a uniform, glasses, and her expression was cold.
Her name was Zhao Weisuo, formerly a professional teacher. When the apocalypse struck, she survived thanks to her knowledge of martial arts. Not only did she survive, she also awakened an extraordinary ability. With her formidable eloquence and the aura of an esper, she recruited a group of followers and led them through countless dangers, ultimately converting the police station into a shelter.
Now, the entire shelter was under her control, but she found little satisfaction in her position. She longed for the day a man stronger than herself would appear, so she could stand beside him and offer her unwavering support.
But before that, exploration was essential. That’s why she’d dispatched the expedition team. Unexpectedly, barely half a day had passed before they lost contact.
She turned her gaze to the side. Next to her, a man with a fawning smile was obsequiously handing her a communicator.
"Your Majesty, if you ask me, those useless fools are all traitors. Let them out and they’ll never come back. But you can count on me—I’m absolutely loyal!"
Listening to his sycophantic words, Zhao Weisuo’s face twisted with disgust.
"Get out!"
"Of course, if you want me gone, I’ll leave right away. But I won’t go far—I’ll wait right outside the door. If you need anything, just call, I’ll be there instantly."
The man, far from being offended, only showed more eagerness and hurried out.
Watching this scene, Zhao Weisuo felt a headache coming on. It wasn’t just this man; nearly everyone in the shelter adopted this sheepish attitude after learning she possessed extraordinary abilities.
"Forget it, don’t go just yet," she said suddenly.
"The expedition team’s disappearance leaves two possibilities: either they’ve escaped, or they’ve been killed. Until there’s evidence, we can’t rule out either one..."
She rubbed her chin thoughtfully.
"Here’s what I want: notify the patrols outside, raise vigilance to the highest level. For the next two days, I want round-the-clock patrols. Any incident must be reported to me immediately."
"Yes, ma’am!" The man quickly left.
But moments later, screams echoed from outside.
"Alert! Alert! Someone’s breaking in—stop him!"
Whistles blared throughout the shelter, followed by a storm of gunfire.
Rat-tat-tat—
Hearing the commotion, Zhao Weisuo stood abruptly.
"Wang Wu, what’s going on out there?"
Wang Wu was the name of the sycophantic man from earlier, but now, he was nowhere to be seen.
"Looks like there’s real trouble," Zhao Weisuo murmured, her eyes cold, but soon a smile appeared.
Someone dared trespass into her domain, overestimating themselves. With her abilities, and dozens of armed patrols outside, even without her powers, they were not to be trifled with.
With that thought, she strode out calmly. But as she stepped outside, she froze.
The once sturdy wire fence now gaped with a massive hole. Two blurred figures darted through the courtyard, each movement sending survivors flying.
The rest fired their weapons in terror, but bullets struck the two shadows to no effect.
"What kind of monsters are these?" Zhao Weisuo’s eyes widened in shock. Her first thought was that she faced two espers. But since when were espers so common? Two could be found so easily, both targeting her?
Soon, the survivors in the yard were dealt with, and the two blurred figures slowed to a halt. Only then did Zhao Weisuo realize: these were not two espers, but a man and a dog!
"So strong..." she whispered, watching Xue Feng approach. He had single-handedly conquered her entire shelter. Could this be the fated man she had always dreamed of?
"Your... Your Majesty," came a trembling voice.
She turned to see Wang Wu, hiding in a corner, miraculously still alive.
"Your Majesty, this man is obviously here for you. Use your powers—make me stronger, and I’ll deal with him!"
Zhao Weisuo fell silent, then nodded. Even if he was her destined one, judging by his demeanor, he was here with murder in mind.
With that in mind, she used her ability to conjure a bun. Wang Wu grabbed it, devouring it ravenously, then fell silent.
The next moment—
Bang!
A heavy heartbeat resounded. An inexplicable wave began to emanate from Wang Wu’s body...
