148 The Fourth-Order Mutant Reappears!
It was precisely because Bai Luer had gathered so many people that the zombie horde was attracted here.
"What! It's my fault?" Bai Luer stood frozen, her mind blank.
Bai Luer had never imagined that saving so many people could be a mistake.
"This base is like a leaking ship on the ocean. Forcibly letting too many people on board can only lead to one ultimate ending: the ship sinks," Xue Feng said calmly.
Hearing this metaphor, Hu Bo and the others couldn't help but feel a surge of secret admiration.
The analogy was simply too fitting.
If you don't have a big enough pond, don't try to raise that many fish!
Even without this wave of zombies, the base would have eventually collapsed due to food shortages anyway.
After all, anyone could see that the current consumption of food was astronomical, while the amount scavenged each day grew increasingly scarce.
It was precisely because of this that Bai Luer had thought of growing vegetables to ease the pressure, sending Hu Bo and the others to haul over some chemical fertilizer from the storage room.
Bai Luer stared blankly at the zombies swarming below the building.
Was she truly wrong?
Did she think she was saving these people, when in reality she was leading them to their doom?
Oh gods!
Please tell me, what is the right thing to do?
How can anyone fight against this apocalypse?
Could it be that all this death—so many innocent people devoured by zombies—is truly what the gods desired?
A wave of dizziness washed over Bai Luer, and her spiritual faith began to crumble.
"The property management center is under siege! Why have all the zombies gathered over there?" At that moment, someone noticed that the area surrounding the property management center was entirely surrounded by zombies, which were frantically slamming against the iron gates and surrounding windows.
"You reap what you sow. Old Qin and his gang have angered quite a few survivors. They'd rather cling to the walls and be torn apart by zombies than go to hell without dragging Old Qin and the others down with them." Xue Feng had already noticed the commotion unfolding at the property management center.
Many survivors were simply standing their ground, drawing the zombies in. Even as they were brutally torn apart and devoured, many of them kept their hands locked onto the window bars.
This caused the zombies to continuously batter the windows and main entrance.
Old Qin and the others inside the property management center had never witnessed such a horrifying spectacle.
Regardless of their advanced age, with some even having lived through wars, this was the apocalypse!
Past experiences were completely useless now.
Some of the elderly shrieked in terror, their blood pressure spiking as they fainted on the spot.
This only incited the zombies further.
Realizing there were living humans inside, the horde grew even more frenzied.
"Don't worry! These monsters can't get in!"
Old Qin was still shouting at the top of his lungs, attempting to boost morale.
Even Xue Feng and the others could hear his desperate cries.
However, mere shouting was entirely useless.
A green, tier-two mutant suddenly appeared at the entrance, gaping its blood-dripping maw to spew a stream of corrosive mucus directly onto the iron gate.
Thick white smoke instantly billowed from the metal surface.
That fluid was highly corrosive!
A few seconds later, the tier-two mutant locked eyes with Old Qin's terrified face through the damaged barrier, a sinister grin spreading across its maw.
Rip!
The tier-two mutant tore the iron gate wide open and charged in first, closely followed by a torrent of other zombies.
In an instant, shrieks and agonizing screams filled the entire property management center.
"We're doomed!"
Witnessing this scene, Hu Bo fell into utter despair.
He had originally thought the property management center was the safest place of all, but in front of a mutant, iron doors offered no protection whatsoever!
Their current location would inevitably be breached sooner or later.
Even if Bai Luer recovered some of her strength, coupled with Xue Feng's ability as an esper, it was impossible to hold off such a terrifying number of zombies.
After all, the sheer volume of monsters down below was staggering!
Bai Luer's eyes were utterly lifeless; she had no idea what to do next.
She couldn't protect anyone.
"It's here!"
Xue Feng's gaze, however, had never once shifted toward the property management center.
The lives and deaths of those people were of no concern to him.
He knew that behind every zombie horde lurked a powerful mutant—creatures that seemed to sense formidable espers and hunted them specifically.
Following the direction of Xue Feng's gaze, Hu Bo and the others looked over.
Terror instantly washed across their faces.
"What on earth is that?!"
A colossal monster, standing at least five meters tall, looked vaguely like a beetle.
Its back was covered in a hard black carapace, from which countless writhing tentacles sprouted. Yet, its head remained the size of a normal human's, twisted into a bizarre, eerie smile.
It slowly dragged its bulk forward.
Its speed was not fast—no faster than an ordinary zombie, restricted to a slow trudge due to its immense mass.
"It actually evolved to look like a crawling bug!" Xue Feng couldn't help but shake his head.
He had encountered numerous mutants before, but none as grotesque as this beetle-like monstrosity.
Could this truly be the correct path of evolution?
Any human with decent mobility should easily be able to outrun it.
If not for the oppressive aura of a tier-four mutant radiating from it...
Xue Feng would have doubted whether this thing was even a zombie at all.
However, Xue Feng's confusion vanished almost immediately.
He watched as the countless legs of the tier-four mutant simultaneously slammed hard against the ground.
In a flash, it vaulted dozens of meters into the air, its entire body curling tightly beneath its heavy carapace.
Like a heavy black cannonball, it plummeted hundreds of feet away, leaving behind a massive crater that looked as though it had been struck by artillery.
Dozens of unfortunate zombies caught in the impact zone were instantly crushed into a pulp, pulverized beyond recognition.
How could any human possibly match such horrifying aerial speed?
No building could ever withstand an assault of that magnitude.
"Oh god! This zombie can fly!" Hu Bo fell into total despair.
He had just caught sight of that monster fixing its gaze squarely upon them, those tiny, malicious eyes locked onto their position.
"So that's how it is. I underestimated you." Xue Feng nodded silently.
Indeed, every tier-four mutant possessed its own unique specialty!
There was a reason it had managed to evolve to this stage.
"What do we do? What do we do?! You guys should run! You're both espers!" Hu Bo urged Xue Feng and Bai Luer.
"No! You run. I'll deal with this thing. While I suppress the horde, take the chance to get out of here," Bai Luer replied with a resolute shake of her head, forcing herself back to her feet.
Though her heart was filled with doubt, saving Hu Bo and the others was something she could still do right now.
"No, we're staying with you!"
Hu Bo offered a bitter smile; they had no intention of abandoning Bai Luer.
She had saved their lives, and given her stubborn nature, there was no persuading her otherwise.
However, there was someone else present who had also saved them—Xue Feng.
Hu Bo looked at Xue Feng, hoping the latter would escape while they tried to buy time.
Yet, neither Hu Bo nor Bai Luer could have anticipated what happened next.
Xue Feng leaped forward, diving straight down into the sea of zombies below without a second thought, completely ignoring the dizzying drop of dozens of meters.
"Divine Firmament! Thunder Orb!"
Xue Feng's voice rang out as a massive sphere of crackling electricity materialized in his palm, blazing with the brilliance of a miniature sun, and hurled ruthlessly down into the horde below.
