Chapter Seven: Only For You

Sitting in the taxi, I no longer felt any panic or unease. To me, as long as Luo Qing was safe, I feared neither man nor fate. After all, my life was worthless—if those people, worth millions, dressed in finery, did not fear me, why should I fear them?

Stepping out of the taxi, I stood in the wind and snow, staring up at the grand sign in golden letters above: “Imperial KTV.” I was lost in thought for a few seconds, then pulled up my collar, clenched my fists, and walked inside.

Pushing open the door, I was greeted by a polite hostess at the entrance, who smiled warmly at me and asked, “Sir, is there anything I can help you with?”

“I have a reservation. Could you check which room Mr. Xia Tian is in?”

She nodded, then walked over to the opulent, well-stocked bar, exchanging a few quiet words with a young woman in a red uniform, who, though stationed at the front desk, remained standing. After their brief exchange, the hostess returned and told me to follow her.

I noticed the other hostess standing nearby giving me a strange look, but I didn’t dwell on it. Since I had come, I would face whatever awaited me—even if it meant venturing into a dragon’s lair or a tiger’s den. Only by plunging in would I know what I was up against.

We took the elevator up to the fifth floor, to a luxury private room. The hostess gestured for me to enter, then left. Straightening my clothes, I pushed open the door.

Inside the lavish room, there was no music, and the lights were dim, only a lamp above the seating casting a faint glow. On the broad sofa sat four or five young men of varying builds, all about twenty-four or twenty-five years old. Among them was Xia Tian, whom I had met before.

“Speak of the clown, and here he comes,” Xia Tian chuckled upon seeing me enter. “Come in, come in, have a seat. The atmosphere just isn’t the same without you.”

I didn’t bother with pleasantries, taking a seat on the other side of the glass round table. Staring at the youths across from me, their hair dyed in all manner of colors, I spoke coldly to Xia Tian: “Cut the nonsense. Where’s Luo Qing?”

“Why are you so damn cocky?” A fat guy across from me, with short red hair and a large gold earring, jabbed a finger at me and cursed, “Kid, don’t act tough in front of Tian. Watch yourself or you’re in trouble.”

Looking at this guy, who seemed ready to start a fight at the slightest provocation, I just smiled. Back in school, I’d tangled with all sorts. I wasn’t showing off—without anything to lose, these guys didn’t scare me one bit.

“Brother Niu, let’s talk it out. Sit down, sit down. Don’t scare our new little friend,” Xia Tian said mockingly, offering a token gesture to calm the fat guy he called “Brother Niu.”

I just sneered at Xia Tian, ignoring his provocation, and pressed on: “Where is Luo Qing right now?”

“Want to know?” Xia Tian grinned maliciously, picked up a small bottle of beer, and set it in front of me. “Down this, and I’ll tell you.”

“And if I don’t?” I glanced at the beer, then looked up, meeting the flicker of surprise in Xia Tian’s eyes.

“Then there’s nothing to talk about. You can leave.” Xia Tian’s expression switched back to a smile as he shrugged and pulled out Luo Qing’s phone, waving it at me.

Seeing Luo Qing’s phone, my resolve began to crumble. I had intended not to bend, but now all I wanted was to know how she was. Whatever their motives, whatever trickery they had planned, I no longer cared.

“Fine, I’ll drink.” I picked up the beer, bit off the cap. “If you’re a real man, keep your word.”

Amid a chorus of jeers and mocking whistles, I drained the beer in one gulp.

Xia Tian clapped slowly, sneering, and beckoned to a blond kid, who grinned wickedly and pulled another beer from under the table, setting it before me.

“What’s the meaning of this?” I wiped the foam from my mouth, glaring at Xia Tian.

“My girlfriend is upstairs right now, but…” Xia Tian’s tone turned suddenly sinister as he pointed to the beer on the table. “Want to know how she’s doing? Drink that.”

I glanced instinctively at the extravagantly decorated but now pitch-dark ceiling, then reached for the beer, forcing a smile. “Fine.”

I bit off the cap and chugged it down in one go, then slammed the empty bottle upside down on the table.

This second bottle made my stomach churn violently. I quickly clamped a hand over my mouth, sucking in air to force it down, barely keeping myself from vomiting on the spot.

“This idiot can really drink,” the blond kid laughed, pulling out another unopened beer. “Go on, aren’t you such a big drinker?”

“She’s fine, but…” Xia Tian suddenly stood, sweeping the beer bottles off the table and pulling out a whole bag of beers, slamming them down with a loud thud. His eyes flashed with open challenge. “There’s a man with her—and even I’m wary of him. I can’t say what he might do.”

“What the hell do you mean by that?” I slammed the table and stood up, pointing at Xia Tian and cursing, “Cut the crap, I want to see her right now!”

As I stood, the red-haired fat man called “Brother Niu” also got up, gripping a beer bottle, his gaze menacing. The others, except Xia Tian, followed suit, each grabbing a bottle and glaring at me.

“Alright, I like your spirit,” Xia Tian said with a laugh instead of anger. Clearing his throat, he said loudly, “I know a bit about what’s going on between you two. I bet you’re still wondering why Luo Qing suddenly left you, aren’t you? What you don’t know, I do. I bet you even believed she went abroad, like a fool.”

“What are you saying?” I stared at Xia Tian, stunned. He knew the secret behind Luo Qing’s disappearance—and according to him, she never left the country.

“Want to know? Fine.” Xia Tian pointed arrogantly at the heap of beer bottles on the table. “Chug them all, one after another. Then not only will I give you the answer, I’ll let you see her. Well?”

“Tian, isn’t that too easy on this kid?” the blond protested.

“Shut up. Don’t interrupt me when I’m talking,” Xia Tian snapped, making the blond drop his head.

“If we’re playing a game, we follow the rules, right?” Xia Tian put on an innocent smile, sounding utterly sincere.

“Fine. You seem like someone who can win or lose with grace. I’ll do as you say, but once I’m done, I want to see Luo Qing immediately.” I stared at the beer bottles that the red-haired fat man was lining up, and as he opened them one after another, I clenched my fists… At this point, I had no other choice. Even if I could beat them all up, so what? Would that get me to Luo Qing?

From the moment I stepped through that door, I was no longer afraid of any scheme or plot. Blood and tears—I, Yang Chen, have had my share. Maybe it’s like people say—maybe I’m hopelessly foolish, laughably naïve. But I love Luo Qing. I am constantly worrying about her safety.

For her… I’d give up everything…

I grabbed a beer and tipped it back, feeling the liquid roil violently in my stomach, threatening to surge up at any moment. But I had to drink. I couldn’t lose. I had to see Luo Qing, safe and standing before me.

One bottle.

I couldn’t give myself time to recover. The moment my body started to react, I’d lose control and vomit, and I wouldn’t be able to go on.

Clutching the beer, I gulped it down, my brain growing starved of oxygen, my stomach rebelling.

Two bottles.

A surge of trapped gas shot into my chest. I wanted to burp, but I dared not. I was afraid if I lost control, I’d vomit everything up, and all would be in vain.

Eyes squeezed shut, I kept drinking, forcing myself to recall Luo Qing’s face. I hoped she could give me strength to endure, strength never to fall.

Three… four… five bottles…

I felt as if my body would explode, a lightness settling over me. My mind was starting to make mistakes; the alcohol was taking hold. It shouldn’t be happening this fast… unless these weren’t ordinary bar beers—the alcohol content must be much higher.

With a bang, I slammed the last empty bottle upside down on the table. Swaying, I looked at Xia Tian, whose face was full of anticipation. My words were already slurring: “Your turn to keep your promise.”

“Not bad, bastard. Your mother must have been a drinker too—grew up in a wine cellar, did you?” the red-haired fat man grumbled, glancing at the six empty bottles lined up on the table.

“See? Didn’t I promise you all a good show tonight?” Xia Tian laughed carelessly with his rowdy friends, then turned to me. “As for Luo Qing’s whereabouts, it all started a few months ago…” He deliberately slowed his speech. Even though my mind was clearly slowing down, I still realized what he was doing—stalling, waiting for the alcohol to take effect.

“I don’t want to hear your secrets. Take me to see Luo Qing. Now. Immediately.” I slammed my fist on the exquisitely crafted glass table, the force knocking every bottle onto its side.

Xia Tian shot me a contemptuous look, smirking. “Fine, I’ll oblige you… Brother Niu, Xiao Ben, take him to see my girlfriend.”
