Chapter Twenty-One: The Invisible Agent

Following closely behind Wang Fugui were Longjian Ninja and Phantom, who, through telepathic communication among psychics, attempted to grasp his meaning.
“How much do you think you’ve understood?”
“Seventy to eighty percent? But I’m not sure if what I’ve understood is a deliberate riddle he set.”
“Your guess at the answer?”
Phantom considered carefully, then transmitted mentally: “He doesn’t belong to our company. Choosing us for security work might not be because he wants to defect to us, but because we rank just below the Group in psychic research.”
“Gaoxin Industries is close to the Group; they far surpass amateur scientists. It might be an allusion to the Group developing new psychic technologies, once again creating a vast generational gap. The ‘extreme purists’ could refer to old humans and some dissidents, or even relatively backward early batches of new humans.”
“Combined with later context, it feels like a hint that the Group intends to completely overturn the table, initiating an unbridgeable human super-evolution, and that we need to unite?”
Longjian Ninja expressed some doubt: “Really? I think the ‘union’ might refer to various factions within the Group itself; the non-local could represent Qi Shiming, and the local ones might be new factions trying to steal the fruits of their work. The rebels could be a similar hint.”
“That rebel group looks like a troupe he hired to play the clown—probably meant as a warning to the locals while signaling a ‘don’t resist’ attitude?”
“From a cautionary standpoint, it seems like the Group has split. The new leader isn’t as capable as senior Qi Shiming but is adept at using others to do his dirty work and lacks magnanimity. Combining your view, it also suggests that someone has been deeply infiltrated by Group agents and has given up resistance?”
Neither explanation is very convincing, yet both seem to hold some truth.
Longjian Ninja and Phantom empathized with how difficult it must be for those intelligence operatives facing such a cryptic figure.
Longjian Ninja decided to end the topic: “Well, with our level, we’re definitely unable to unravel the truth. Wild speculation that leads to wrong guesses is worse than no guess at all. Anyway, we’ve already passed the content to the intelligence department. Our job is just to gather evidence.”
Phantom pondered: “But what’s his proof? How did he get the intelligence?”
Longjian Ninja had a conjecture: “Do you think he’ll die after brazenly making that speech in front of everyone? How would he die?”
Phantom understood: “Normally, he wouldn’t die. Those who could kill him wouldn’t do so because of reckless words or deeds. Besides us, there must be many who want to keep him alive. But if this is his last gamble, I think his life and death are part of the truth.”
“Perhaps many will witness his death.”
“Do you feel it? He’s become... warmer?”

Longjian Ninja did not respond, immediately changing the subject: “The event over there seems fine. The livestream shows everything is calm. After Sisi and the newcomer finish their tasks, what do you think they’ll do?”
Mo Wen, who had just asked staff to announce the event’s ending and disperse the crowd, was almost eager to enjoy the learning device and catch up on lessons. But a military cyborg approached him.
The Life Pharmaceuticals emblem on his chest was strikingly prominent.
He smiled gently: “Hello, Mr. Mo Wen. I didn’t expect this mission would bring me to you. Perhaps this is fate’s guidance.”
“You probably don’t know me. Let me briefly introduce myself. I’m a friend of ‘Vanessa,’ the military cyborg you killed not long ago.”
Mo Wen frowned slightly: “Seeking revenge?”
The visitor shook his head: “Not exactly. She was the one who initiated the attack on you, so she has no one to blame but herself for being killed.”
“But she was an excellent prophet, a friend worthy of respect, a kind-hearted person. When she risked her life for something, giving up everything yet unwilling to involve her friends, who could dismiss her final efforts as hysteria?”
“I believe in her. You must have given her a reason worth abandoning everything to kill you.”
“But prophecy is not absolute; her reasons may not convince everyone.”
“I hope to examine your thoughts a little.”
Although Mo Wen hadn’t done much to feel guilty about, he didn’t think his mind was something anyone could manipulate at will, and certainly not something a stranger could just glance at and leave.
“I refuse!”
The visitor continued persuading: “Are you sure? Besides me, Vanessa had many friends. Our power isn’t limited to Life Pharmaceuticals alone.”
“Some enemies on the battlefield also respect her, setting aside personal stances, solely to investigate the truth behind her fatal struggle for humanity and a potentially grim future.”
“Are you truly prepared to face so many attacking you?”
Mo Wen replied resolutely: “No matter how many, let them come! I will see it through.”
The visitor did not press further: “Very well, I understand your stance.”

“Then, I wish you a life without regrets.”
The visitor’s figure suddenly vanished. Mo Wen immediately realized the presence had been abnormal. He checked his cyborg logs, stunned to find no record of this person from the start.
Was it psychic illusion? Or had someone hacked into his cyborg?
He quickly contacted Ren Sisi via team comms: “Did you see that Life Pharmaceuticals cyborg near me just now? He said he was a friend of ‘Vanessa,’ the cyborg I killed.”
“No, I didn’t see anyone.” Ren Sisi didn’t suspect Mo Wen was hallucinating. She immediately searched Vanessa’s social network. “Tell me what that cyborg looked like, any special markings... No, that’s silly. Just identify him based on the relationship map I sent you.”
Mo Wen glanced at the network she sent: “None of them match.”
“However, I found that my cyborg can transcribe mental images into data and pictures. Try to identify this.”
Ren Sisi received a portrait from Mo Wen and uploaded it to the company database. Soon she made a discovery.
“That is the Group agent ‘Invisible’s’ usual disguise. He has countless clones and can project himself into others’ imaginations. A Level 5 Alpha-class psychic!”
Ren Sisi panicked: “Why are you being targeted by someone like that? Get out of there! Return to base at once! I’ve already requested company backup.”
“There’s no time for a helicopter. Run! Use your psychic powers! Don’t let them catch you.”
Mo Wen nearly launched a full-speed strategic retreat but felt something was off.
He instinctively feigned: “Invisible, why do you want me to use psychic powers?”
No sign of Invisible being startled by Mo Wen’s awareness appeared; no unveiling of his powers or the true situation. Only Ren Sisi sounded confused: “Mo Wen, what are you talking about?”
Mo Wen gave no answer. With a resolute finality, he struck fiercely at his own head.
