Chapter 18: Protecting One Another

Wang Dong’s eyes flashed with a swift reaction as he scooped up Xiao Wu and leapt aside to dodge. Yet, the black energy orb seemed equipped with some kind of tracking mechanism, relentlessly pursuing them from behind.

“What a worthless thing,” he muttered under his breath while evading.

A soft chuckle escaped Xiao Wu’s lips. Wang Dong looked at her in confusion, not understanding what amused her.

It seemed she sensed his puzzlement but chose not to explain. Instead, she simply felt that as long as she was by his side, even facing danger wouldn’t make her panic.

At that moment, she already knew the answer and spoke up proactively: “It’s a spirit beast, and its cultivation is not low. Let’s go find Uncle Ning and the others.”

“But…” Wang Dong hesitated.

But if they did that, they’d encounter the Title Douluo, and she would be in danger.

Ignoring these distractions, the thing behind her lengthened and quickened its pace.

Seeing this, Xiao Wu charged head-on, repeatedly attacking with waist strikes, kicking while dodging assaults from both ends.

“This filthy creature, does it have no head?”

No sooner had she spoken than the creature seemed provoked; its body instantly doubled in size and sprouted a head and tail, resembling a giant black silkworm.

Xiao Wu was utterly stunned.

The Butterfly of Flames rose slowly, and as the golden pillar dissipated, it transformed into a massive crescent-shaped light blade that sliced the black beam in half.

The black silkworm seemed taken aback that a mere child could block its attack.

Xiao Wu blinked in surprise, then laughed aloud.

It was the first time she had seen such a look of disbelief on a worm’s face.

The golden light blade was relentless; as the black beam was cut, a second and third followed, striking the silkworm repeatedly.

The nearly twenty-meter-long creature was swiftly shredded into small pieces by the three blades.

“Damn it!” the silkworm roared in fury.

Its head barely escaped, and new body segments kept growing behind it.

But the rate at which the body grew couldn’t match the speed of Wang Dong’s three blades cutting it down.

“Xiao Dong! You’re amazing!” Xiao Wu called out to him.

Wang Dong forced a slow smile. “This worm… I don’t know how many years it’s lived. My soul power isn’t enough to truly harm it; this can only buy us time.”

He almost couldn’t say those last words. Maintaining such a soul technique was rapidly draining his soul power.

Seeing Xiao Wu’s frightened expression, he quickly added, “Don’t worry, you already forced it to recall its clone. Grandfather Sword and the others will arrive soon…”

Before he could finish, Wang Dong’s golden wings behind him instantly reverted to their blue hue, and he began to fall.

Xiao Wu immediately sprang up, leaping into the air to catch Wang Dong tightly in her arms, shielding him as best she could.

The three light blades vanished on the spot, leaving no barrier. The silkworm quickly returned to normal.

“You little brats! Let’s see how you escape now!”

With that, the two antennae on its forehead rapidly inflated, and a golden aura appeared around it.

Wang Dong, though drained, struggled to summon his wings once more, enveloping himself and Xiao Wu within them.
