Chapter Eight: The Vampire
"Can we leave now?"
"Wait a moment, I have a new employee to activate."
"Then get ready; after all, we still have some time before our scheduled meeting."
With that, Blade fell silent. Yet Lynn could sense a deep-seated resentment within him, an indelible hatred that refused to fade.
Descending underground, Lynn noticed that the small generator he had prepared was nearly depleted. To keep the entire system running, the generators had to operate continuously.
But finally, he had completed the last task.
This work demanded time.
The liquid in the cultivation tank gradually faded away, and the humanoid lifeform, created from the purple subject, was awakened by Lynn.
She slowly opened her eyes. When the nurturing fluid could no longer sustain her suspension, she opened her eyes.
Mastering her center of gravity, she stood steadily on the ground.
Stepping out of the cultivation tank, she spoke for the first time.
"Doctor."
Lynn did not let his creation, whom he had devoted himself to crafting, call him 'boss'; after all, some creations he did not regard as mere commodities.
"Put on your clothes, Carla. We have work to do soon. As my assistant, report the current status."
Lynn handed Carla a set of women's clothing he had bought along the way. Quickly, she dried herself with a towel and changed into the professional outfit he had prepared.
The black professional attire, paired with her distinctive purple skin, brought out a unique aesthetic.
"Body functions are normal, consciousness clear, memory intact, psychological state healthy. I assess myself as fully meeting your requirements for an assistant, Doctor."
It seemed Lynn’s efforts had paid off. The most troublesome aspect had been editing the memories of his creations. Yet Carla’s successful activation showed that memory implantation by non-supernatural means was feasible. It just went to show that the technology of the Descendants was hardly outdated even in this world.
Lynn’s several experiments had succeeded perfectly. Though there had been a few early failures, they were minor and inconsequential.
However, Lynn’s true ambitions did not lie in biotic editing and modification. To realize the grander visions in his mind, the rudimentary laboratory was clearly insufficient.
He needed more resources.
"Let’s go. We have work tonight."
"Understood, Doctor."
Back on the first floor, Lynn saw Blade waiting outside in a car, with Tom and Jekutor already seated in the back.
Without hesitation, Lynn took the front passenger seat, while Carla sat in the rear.
"Do you have any other reinforcements?"
"Yes, she’s already gone ahead."
"I recall her name is Karen? What about the old man?"
"Dead."
Blade, as always, spoke little beyond that. Fortunately, Lynn was no Deadpool; he wasn’t inclined to banter with Blade’s crude jokes or dark humor.
The streets of New York at night were nearly deserted, and their destination lay in a seldom-visited district.
After crossing several blocks, they finally arrived at the site Blade had mentioned.
"We’re here," Blade said, pointing to an unremarkable building. It was clear that Deacon was inside.
"Do you intend to plan a tactical deployment, or just walk in directly?"
"I only need you to draw the guards’ attention. The matter with Deacon is mine to resolve. Once you’ve done what’s necessary, I won’t question what’s inside this building."
Lynn was curious why Blade sought help. Normally, he should be a nightmare for these vampires—regularly taking on groups single-handedly and emerging unscathed.
But this time, things seemed different.
"Give me the details of the guard deployment."
Blade handed Lynn a tablet, unlocking the virtual lock. Lynn saw the security layout within the building.
What he saw reshaped his view of this plain-looking building.
The long list of personnel consisted largely of veterans, special forces, or police officers turned vampires.
It was evident that Deacon’s vampire security was no mere gang; it was a real, compact mercenary force.
Moreover, their weaponry was formidable—various large-caliber assault rifles, and even some specialized heavy firepower.
The intelligence suggested that this building housed several hundred elite vampires, nearly immune to most physical attacks.
Their bulletproof gear was heavier than ordinary humans could bear, thanks to their vampiric physiology supporting more robust personal protection.
They were almost impervious to small arms fire. It was hard to imagine this vampire stronghold could be taken with just a silver sword and a few submachine guns. No wonder Blade had been captured.
"Looks like your enemies are truly afraid of you. These vampires wrapped in fiber armor—no matter how many bullets you empty into them, they probably won’t be fazed."
"They should be afraid. Otherwise, I would have stormed Deacon’s home and taken his head long ago.
They invested heavily in building this force, and they rarely appear in public view.
Because this is the headquarters of one of the clans."
"Clan?"
Lynn was hearing about this for the first time. It seemed that in this world, the vampire king’s word was not absolute, even in Transylvania.
"I'm not very familiar with the internal affairs of vampire clans. Their secrecy is greater than you imagine. In fact, even the unlucky ones caught in accidents or hunts know little of the full vampire reality."
"I guess you’ve killed some high-ranking members of this clan?"
"Not many. Deacon’s subordinates, responsible for their enterprises, gave me access to find them, but most hide inside that building."
Lynn gleaned much from Blade’s words. The vampire threat in New York extended beyond Deacon’s clan; others were lurking.
Yet, according to the intel, these vampires’ heavy firepower was limited. They had no anti-vehicle explosives or large-caliber machine guns.
All well within Tom’s and Jekutor’s capacity.
"Then I’ll strike from the front, drawing most of the fire. After that, it’s up to you to finish it.
We’ll meet again at dawn."
"Doctor, shall we proceed with the plan you stored in my mind?"
"Yes. First, control their combat forces, then you’ll lead them toI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
