Chapter Twenty-Two: Jealousy
“Sis… I know I was wrong.” Jiang Hu, seeing that Mo Nian Nian’s attitude was no longer as stern as before, softened his tone and tried to win her over.
Mo Nian Nian kept her face cold. “There was already a way to deal with him. Why did you insist on risking everything and putting yourself in danger?”
Jiang Hu pressed his lips together, his expression dark. “We catch him, and then what? Death sentence becomes life imprisonment, life turns into a fixed term?”
Such punishment was far too lenient for him.
“Every world has its own rules. The rules may not be the best, but they are the most suitable for that world. How do you know that death is his greatest punishment?”
Jiang Hu was momentarily stunned.
Mo Nian Nian continued, “Do you know what people like him fear most?”
Without waiting for Jiang Hu to answer, she went on, “Scum like him, what they fear most is death. As long as you leave him a sliver of hope, he’ll cling to it desperately.”
“Even if it means living like a dog.” Mo Nian Nian whispered this in Jiang Hu’s ear, patted his shoulder, and went to handle the aftermath.
She made sure everything was taken care of, leaving no loose ends, before returning to her room to sleep.
Jiang Hu stood in the living room, unable to sleep through the night.
The next day, the police came knocking. Jiang Hu was ready to take responsibility for everything; he would bear the consequences of his own actions.
But he wondered… would his sister forget about him?
To his surprise, the police were there for the dispute between Wang Qiang and Jiang Hu’s parents, and didn’t mention anything about the previous night.
Before leaving, a police officer remarked, “Wang Qiang must have offended someone. He was beaten half to death last night. He’s still in the hospital and probably won’t be sent to prison for a few days yet.”
Mo Nian Nian smiled slightly. “That’s fine. As long as it can be proven that everything before was his doing, and justice is served for us.”
Mo Nian Nian patted Jiang Hu’s head. “This child has suffered over the years.”
“It’s thanks to you. You took good care of him.”
The police exchanged a few polite words with Mo Nian Nian.
Jiang Hu couldn’t help but ask, “Did he say who did it?”
The officer chuckled. “That’s the strange part. He forgot what happened last night, seems he hit his head.”
The policeman scratched his own head, then added, “We checked the nearby surveillance, but found no signs of anyone coming or going.”
Actually, there was another matter the police kept to themselves. Someone had called the ambulance for Wang Qiang, but no matter how they searched, they couldn’t trace the owner of that phone number.
For now, the matter had to be shelved.
---
They had their doubts about these two, but both appeared gentle and frail, and nothing seemed amiss during their conversation. The police automatically ruled them out.
News of Wang Qiang’s incident spread, causing a stir throughout the capital.
People still remembered the Jiang family case, and hadn’t expected such a dramatic reversal after so many years.
A wave of sighs swept through the crowd.
Many angry citizens demanded severe punishment for Wang Qiang.
His actions were truly despicable.
The case attracted great attention, given its terrible impact, and with Wang Qiang’s other crimes—tax evasion and more—he was charged on multiple counts and ultimately sentenced to death, to be carried out immediately.
The decision brought immense satisfaction, and Wang Qiang’s entire family was scolded roundly.
At last, the matter was resolved. Mo Nian Nian breathed a sigh of relief, hoping the little one wouldn’t do anything reckless again.
Impatiently, she checked the system’s task progress, only to be told: “Task incomplete. Please keep working.”
Mo Nian Nian looked at the little one with resentment. She’d helped him deal with his greatest enemy without him having to bear the burden of a life.
After all this, what more could he want?
Mo Nian Nian, helpless, continued to keep an eye on Jiang Hu, waiting for this little ancestor to show mercy, drop his malice value to zero, and let her finish the task quickly.
Jiang Hu knew he’d made a grave mistake, so he became even more obedient and sensible, as if Mo Nian Nian had seen a different person before.
“Why does Sister keep looking at me like that?” Jiang Hu tilted his head, so adorably that anyone’s heart would melt.
Who could resist such a cute little attack? Mo Nian Nian quickly lost her temper. Well, she was fine anyway. If she had to wait a few years, so be it.
Mo Nian Nian waved her hand. “It’s nothing, go about your business.”
Jiang Hu suddenly leaned in, his voice sweet and soft. “My favorite thing is being with Sister.”
He wrapped his arms around Mo Nian Nian’s neck, buried his head against her, and nuzzled like a spoiled child.
In his eyes, a sickly obsession lurked, and he took the opportunity to inhale deeply.
His embrace grew tighter, his gaze ever more unhinged.
He was nearly losing control.
Sister, what should he do?
Mo Nian Nian was initially uncomfortable with Jiang Hu’s closeness. Whenever he approached, she felt ill at ease, but now she handled him with practiced ease.
---
She reached out and pushed Jiang Hu’s head away. “Stop acting spoiled, you’re already so grown up.”
Mo Nian Nian spoke with disdain, but her eyes sparkled. Even a big cat acting cute was irresistible.
Jiang Hu hugged her tightly again. “No way… No matter how old I get, I’ll always be Sister’s little darling.”
This greasy line, coming from Jiang Hu’s lips, was soft and sweet, like a spoonful of honey melting all the way to the heart.
Mo Nian Nian’s mouth dismissed him as childish, but her hand reached out to pat his head.
Another day, another bout of cuteness that left her breathless.
Mo Nian Nian’s phone rang. She answered, “Hello, Officer Liu.”
“Yes, I’m here.”
“Now? I have time, I’ll be right down.”
Mo Nian Nian finished speaking and peeled the clingy Jiang Hu off herself. “I have something to do, I’ll be downstairs for a bit and back soon.”
With that, she opened the door and left. Jiang Hu lowered his head, his expression unreadable, but the room grew colder, as if winter had arrived.
Officer Liu…
Jiang Hu repeated the name under his breath, his lips curling into a smile, but his eyes were dark and menacing.
He walked to the balcony and saw two figures downstairs.
They were the police who had visited before. The two stood together, talking, and Mo Nian Nian was smiling happily.
The sight was infuriating.
Jiang Hu stood on the balcony, staring at them, his gaze growing colder.
Only when Mo Nian Nian and Officer Liu bid farewell did he return to the sofa.
Sister had left him for that man’s phone call. Damn, he really wanted to kill him.
The system watched the rising malice value, nearly bursting into tears. It trembled as it spoke to Mo Nian Nian, “Host, the male lead’s malice value is rising again.”
