Chapter Nineteen: Consolation
Mo Nianian shifted slightly, and Jiang Hu's entire body stiffened. Mo Nianian wanted to find a reason for Jiang Hu to let go first—let them get up and talk; what kind of ridiculous posture was this, anyway?
Just then, Jiang Hu spoke in a muffled voice, “Sister, I’m thinking about my parents.”
Those ten-odd years when his parents were alive were the happiest of his life.
Later, he once suspected that he’d used up all his luck in this lifetime, which was why he suffered so much afterwards.
But now, he’d overturned that suspicion.
He had indeed spent all his luck, but only so he could meet Mo Nianian.
Mo Nianian only knew that Jiang Hu’s parents had died tragically; she didn’t know how they’d died.
She stiffly patted Jiang Hu’s shoulder. “It’s alright, I’m here with you.”
“Will you be by my side for the rest of my life?” Jiang Hu clutched Mo Nianian’s sleeve tightly, releasing all his obsessive darkness and madness into the night.
He stared hard at Mo Nianian, waiting for her answer.
Mo Nianian hesitated for a few seconds.
Once she completed her mission, she’d have to leave—how could she stay with him forever?
Jiang Hu’s face gradually darkened, looking utterly grim. So she’d always been thinking of leaving him?
Jiang Hu was on the verge of losing his mind.
[Warning! Male lead’s malice value skyrocketing! Malice value skyrocketing!] The system had never seen such a terrifying increase in malice.
It panicked and urged Mo Nianian, [Host, whatever you do, stabilize him first! If this continues, our mission will fail!]
The system was anxious beyond measure.
Mo Nianian was a little annoyed. [Alright, shut up.]
She glanced up at Jiang Hu. He was bowing his head, impossible to read, and just looking at him, she couldn’t imagine what he was plotting inside.
This child truly seemed to have some issues.
Jiang Hu gripped Mo Nianian’s clothing so tightly his fingertips turned white. “You’re all I have left.”
Mo Nianian sighed. She patted his head. “I’ll stay with you, alright? I’ll stay with you.”
He was still just a child; what was there to argue about? Maybe in a few years, he’d have forgotten everything, and when he found his lifelong companion, how could he still remember her?
Jiang Hu looked up, his gaze deep. “Always?”
“Yes, always with you.”
Jiang Hu smiled; it was as if a beam of light cut through the dim room, dazzlingly bright. He nodded vigorously, clinging to Mo Nianian with tender obsession.
Sister had promised him—they would always, always be together.
All the gloom that had weighed on Jiang Hu the entire day vanished in an instant, and his smile became sweet. “Sister, why did you come to see me?”
“I was just passing by.”
Jiang Hu picked up the cake Mo Nianian had bought, scooped a spoonful, and offered it to her. “Sister, you eat first.”
Mo Nianian looked at Jiang Hu, now reverted to his warm, adorable self, and felt her mood lighten. She took a bite as he offered, asking casually, “So what happened to you today? You seem quite upset.”
“I met my parents’ enemy.”
Jiang Hu’s expression was calm as he withdrew the spoon, his gaze fixed on the piece Mo Nianian had eaten.
His eyes burned with naked intensity; he quietly scooped another bite, put it into his mouth, and licked it slowly, savoring every crevice.
Mo Nianian noticed, thinking perhaps the boy had forgotten, and swallowed her words of admonishment.
She seized the chance to ask about his enemy.
Only then did she learn the whole story.
Jiang Hu’s parents had run a building materials company, and had a good relationship with Wang Qiang. They partnered on a project, but Wang Qiang, driven by greed for massive profits, secretly switched suppliers.
The project went wrong, resulting in five deaths. While Jiang Hu’s parents were investigating, Wang Qiang exploited their trust and shifted all the blame onto them.
Jiang Hu’s parents were arrested. Wang Qiang applied for bail, got them released, and told them to flee as far as possible.
But Jiang Hu’s parents believed the police would eventually clear their names and refused to leave.
They entrusted Jiang Hu to Mo Nianian; at that time, hope still remained. They told Jiang Hu to behave, promising to come back for him soon.
But as soon as Jiang Hu ran away from Mo Nianian’s house, he witnessed his parents being killed in a car accident.
Later, the verdict came in: his parents had used substandard materials, causing major casualties.
All their assets were confiscated, and even after their deaths, they were reviled by countless people.
To this day, J
